Backend Development with .NET

Build an app for your daily tasks: start by receiving and displaying task names, organise them in classes, serve them over the web, then save and publish them.

ForBeginners who want to build the part of an application that receives requests, saves data, and performs operations. No previous programming experience is required.
OutcomeA service that saves tasks and lets you add, view, edit, and delete them, then publish it for others to try online.

Stage 1

Programming Foundations and C#

Start with a program that receives and displays a task name. Store it in a variable, reject empty input with a condition, and receive several tasks with a loop.

You need
No prior programming experience is required.
You will be able to
You can receive task names, store them in variables, ignore empty input, and repeat input and output with loops.

Stage 2

Objects and .NET Projects

Group task data, such as its name and status, in a class, and organize the operations that use it in a .NET project.

You need
Complete C# foundations and small command-line programs.
You will be able to
You can create classes, properties, methods, and manage a .NET project with dependencies.

Stage 3

ASP.NET Core and Services

Learn how your app receives a browser request and sends a response. This communication is called HTTP. Use ASP.NET Core to decide what happens for each request.

You need
Be able to write a small C# program, organize its data with classes, and run a .NET project.
You will be able to
You can receive a request and respond, organize the parts of the program that perform work, and add steps such as logging a request before handling it.

Stage 4

APIs and Databases

Add, view, edit, and delete tasks; these operations are called CRUD. Let another app request them through an API, and save tasks in a database using Entity Framework Core and SQLite.

You need
Be able to run an ASP.NET Core app that receives a request and responds, and understand the request address and method.
You will be able to
You can define addresses to add, view, edit, and delete tasks, and save the data so it remains available after the app closes.

Stage 5

Project and Deployment

Combine what you learned into a task service, then publish it for someone else to try online.

You need
Have a working local task service that saves data, and be able to save versions of the project with Git.
You will be able to
A project saved on GitHub and a service people can try online, with a README explaining how to run and use it.
